Grief Counselling

Grief therapy helps to expand your emotional toolkit to better understand and deal with everything you’re going through during each stage of the grieving process.

Seeking out counselling can, over time, help with moving through the emotional and physical effects of grief.

Grief is a natural response that follows a profound loss, often the death of someone we love.

Grief can also be triggered by other losses, such as losing your pet, your home, your marriage, your career.  Some people experience ambiguous or complicated grief when grief isn’t resolving naturally and are stuck in ‘frozen grief’.

At some point in our lives, we all experience deep sorrow and emptiness. Grief is a universal experience, yet grieving is a life-changing loss and can be a very personal and isolating experience as no two people process complex emotions in the same way. Friends and family may not fully understand what you’re going through … or know what to say to be supportive.

Symptoms of grief manifest both in the mind and the body. Emotional symptoms can include:

    • Intense sadness
    • Shock
    • Denial
    • Hopelessness
    • Yearning
    • Anguish
    • Guilt
    • Helplessness
    • Anger
    • Regret
    • Blaming
    • Numbness
    • Fear
    • Overwhelm
    • Loneliness

Grief can also have a serious impact on your physical health,

overworking both your nervous system and your immune system, making it easier for you to get sick as you move through this emotionally vulnerable time. Symptoms can include:

    • Extreme fatigue
    • Confusion
    • Headaches
    • Nausea
    • Restlessness
    • Upset stomach
    • Heart palpitations
    • Joint pain
    • Tightness in your throat or chest
    • Reduced or increased appetite
    • Insomnia or excessive sleeping
    • Increased inflammation

Grief after a loss can result in uncommon behaviours, including:

    • Extreme focus on or avoidance of reminders of the loss
    • Detachment
    • Difficult making plans for the future or doing things you used to enjoy
    • Isolation from family and friends
    • Not accepting the loss

But all is not lost – there is a way to travel through the darkness. You don’t have to do it alone. An experienced grief counsellor can help with addressing your suffering.  The overall goal of grief therapy is to help with readjusting to a new reality and to help you move through the tasks of mourning.
